“(A Psalm of David.) The LORD is my light and my salvation; whom shall I fear? the LORD is the strength of my life, of whom shall I be afraid?
When the wicked, even mine enemies and my foes, came upon me to eat up my flesh, they stumbled and fell.
Though an host should encamp against me, my heart shall not fear: though war should rise against me, in this will I be confident.
One thing have I desired of the LORD, that I will seek after, that I may dwell in the house of the LORD all the days of my life, to behold the beauty of the LORD, and enquire in his temple.
For in the time of trouble he shall hide me in his pavilion: in the secret of his tabernacle shall he hide me: he shall set me upon a rock.
And now shall mine head be lifted up above mine enemies round about me: therefore will I offer in his tabernacle sacrifices of joy; I will sing, yea, I will sing praises unto the LORD.
Hear O LORD, when I cry with my voice: have mercy upon me, and answer me.
When thou saidst, Seek ye my face; my heart said unto thee, Thy face, LORD, will I seek.” PSALMS 27:1-8
The holiness of the Lord.
You know I often ponder why humans feel the need to lavish such titles on mere mortals. titles such as His Holiness.
Jehovah God alone deserves such a title.
A title He alone is worthy of because no human nor any being in the universe could ever be deserving of such honor. Nor does any other embody the attributes of true holiness.
I love comedy, even scripture tells us that “laughter is merry medicine” but it is almost impossible to find anything that does not cross the line, I happened upon such a program and thought this will be great, clean humor, but it really didn’t take long until the God “jokes” came to call,
There is no time or occasion that is ever appropriate for such “humor”.
I truly believe this was on of the tools the enemy used to infiltrate Christianity to the point it is today, when there are organizations under the banner of Christianity that are nothing more than the devils dens and absolute abomination to God considering they welcome and encourage things that are absolute abominations to him, as his word instructs.
I am not talking about having fun, laughing and good church fellowship, I am talking about the complete lack of acknowledgment and reverence for the holiness of God.
Once God and Christianity, praise and worship are consider common and fair game for ridicule or off color humor, the holiness is removed.
The entire point of holiness is consecrated and set apart it is not supposed to look like the world, sound like the world, or behave like the world and the rules of the world definably do not apply.
The Holiness of God is separate and should be kept separate.
We have to be aware and beware of anything in this world that we may be exposed to in any form that can insult or disrespect Jesus or the Holy Spirit, or the Holiness of Jehovah God.
JAMES 4:4 “… know ye not that the friendship of the world is enmity with God? whosoever therefore will be a friend of the world is the enemy of God.”
Now I do not believe that this means that we are to shun those who are yet unsaved, but we are to shun the world, it’s attitudes, jokes, customs, and behaviors as it all violates the ordinates of God.
PSALMS 25:14: “The secret of the LORD is with them that fear (reverence) him; and he will shew them his covenant.”
We have to be very intentional about what we are exposed to and what we allow in our homes.
You are probably wondering what all this has to do with the holiness of the LORD, everything.
I’m not saying any of these things will take away your salvation or cause the loss of your eternal promises, once we ask forgiveness, we are forgiven and no man can pluck us out of the hand of Jesus.
I am saying that for those who desire to see the peace and goodness of the Lord in the land of the living (as scripture says) there is a higher road to be travelled.
It’s up to us whether or not we feel the top of that mountain is worth the climb.
I would like to direct your attention to something David said in our starting passage, he said that he would seek after the Lord, seek for his holiness, to know him and worship in the beauty of his holiness all the days of his life.
He was not speaking of the afterlife, he was referencing the joy and fellowship with God that he could enjoy in this life. In this realm, the land of the living.
PSALMS 142:5: “I cried unto thee, O LORD: I said, Thou art my refuge and my portion in the land of the living.”
PSALMS 116;9: ” I will walk before the LORD in the land of the living.”
JOB 28:12-28: ” But where shall wisdom be found? and where is the place of understanding?
Man knoweth not the price thereof; neither is it found in the land of the living (can not be attained through the world)
The depth saith, It is not in me: and the sea saith, It is not with me.
It cannot be gotten for gold, neither shall sliver be weighed for the price thereof.
It cannot be valued with the gold of Ophir, with precious onyx, or the sapphire.
The gold and the crystal cannot equal it: and the exchange of it shall not be for jewels of fine gold.
No mention shall be made of coral, or of pearls: for the price of wisdom is above rubies.
The topaz of Ethiopia shall not equal it, neither shall it be valued with pure gold.
Whence then cometh wisdom (where then does wisdom come from)? and where is the place of understanding?
Seeing it is hid from the eyes of the living, and kept close from the fowls of the air.
Destruction and death say, We have heard the fame thereof with our ears.
God understands the way thereof, and he knoweth the place thereof.
For he looketh to the ends of the earth, and seeth under the whole heaven;
To make the weight for the winds; and he weigheth waters by measure.
When he made a decree for the rain, and a way for the lightning of the thunder:
Then did he see it, and declare it; he prepared it, yea, and searched it out.
And unto man he said, Behold, the fear of the LORD, that is wisdom; and to depart from evil is understanding.”
{*In reference to death and destruction Jesus took power away from the death and grave*}
No force on earth can understand the wisdom of God, nothing on earth is of such value that it can purchase the things of God, no natural force nor any condition can bring understanding of Him and his ways.
Only in beauty of His Holiness and at the feet of Jesus can joy and understanding in this life be found.
He encourages us, as he did David, to seek him,
He also tells us in his word that when we seek him with our whole hearts we will find him.
We will also find peace, joy, love, and refreshment that is unlike anything this world can offer and in doing so lead others to him also.
Seek him, seek out his holiness, pray David’s prayer from the passage above, make a conscious decision to seek out that place of refuge and he will not turn away.
Please join me next time for part two, we will be looking at sacrifices to God, spiritual sacrifices and what it means to be the living sacrifice that we are desired to be.
