“But shun profane and vain babblings: for they will increase unto more ungodliness.” 2 Timothy 2:16
Well, I suppose by the title you can guess where this is headed.
Just off the cuff, please know that this is not meant to be a judgy, everyone is going hell kinda post.
So please stay with me.
It is actually an observation post, get it?
Watchman… observation post?
Ahh, never mind, can’t blame a chick for trying though.
While I have all always had words that were off limits for use in in my vocabulary, before I was saved there were moments in times of anger that I could out cuss a couple of drunken sailors, as the old stereotype goes.
Can’t never think about cussing without thinking about the old-timers, which reminds, I myself now, am becoming an old-timer!
One in particular would always say “QUIT that cussing!”, and not just to me but to anyone that was in fact cussing.
Once I accepted Christ, he cleaned up not only my soul but my mouth also.
Now that I have admitted that I am reaching the time-honored stage of Old-Timerism, it is my turn to loudly proclaim to all who will listen, QUIT THAT CUSSING!
Before we get going, I want to take the old tried and true approach to the definition of the key words here, to drive home the seriousness in each meaning.
SHUN: Avoid, reject, turn one’s back on, steer clear of, are just a few meanings.
PROFANE: Secular. worldly, disrespectful, obscene, foul, vulgar, crude.
VAIN: Conceited, useless, narcissistic, self-admiring, pointless, worthless.
It never ceases to amaze what a hold vulgarity has taken on our society.
The majority of its new popularity can be attributed to the beast of the world wide web spreading the rampant and normalized use of constant obscenities as part of everyday language.
Using that same system, it continues to spread a plethora of degradation and spiritual poison, throughout the entire world.
The leaders, who supposedly adhere to a more refined level of behavior, now spewing F this, and F that and others desiring a cocky display of false bravado take a more conservatively “acceptable” approach with damn this, and damn that, which technically means to condemn, but we all know that it is used in a show of outrage and vanity.
It has been quite the feat to find movies or even television over the last decade without being subjected to constant vulgarity but now it has crept in to what proclaims to be Christian domain.
One clip of a supposed prayer followed by f bombs by the prayer leader while making conversation after that “prayer”.
YouTubers proclaiming Christ with one breath and the with the next spewing off the f bombs and flying the bird.
So much that it is inescapable.
It gets so disheartening.
And I am not bashing them, vulgarity is a nasty little habit, and bad habits do not just go away they must be broken.
When a behavior is so accepted many simply quit listening to that little voice telling them to tone it down a bit and override the knowledge of God that the profess to hold.
It really is all about the profane babblings, it is babbling, spewing off words to be heard, when so many other words that will convey anger and outrage just as well.
We are also warned that this behavior will lead to more ungodliness, and it already has.
Why would anyone take salvation or the need for salvation seriously, if there are no differences in the conversations of those in the world and those who say that they are of the Kingdom of Christ?
Where is the promise of a new creature, a new man (human) in Christ, if we still say and do all the same things that we always have?
No, Christ changes us, and without a marked change in attitude, behavior, and lifestyle those professing that change really need to evaluate the truth of God and his word.
We are to be a light to the world, if we spew darkness and profanity, we are not spreading light, we are spreading more darkness by allowing all those that we may influence to falsely believe that God has no standard of acceptable behavior.
Believe it or not, once upon a time, society itself frowned upon the usage of such words and now it is almost impossible to be in public, or in a workplace with hearing the f word or the GD word before or after every other word in many sentences.
It is not impressive; it has never made me think, “Wow, this is a tough person, coming off with all this cursing, they must really be something!”
No, actually it makes me think the opposite, it is not impressive to curse you family, friends, a situation, or just to be cursing in a conversation.
Anyone can curse, throw a tantrum, and think the world owes them something because they are special and that is truly the vibe that is given off.
No matter what programs you may enjoy watching, podcasts you may listen too, despite any benefit that you feel you gain through the connection, I want to ensure that you are not benefiting at all.
This is not just a when in Rome kind of deal.
Rome burned remember, ultimately controlled by a demonic crackpot that committed every imaginable atrocity, hating God and literally using humans as torches.
The devil will come to what is his and profanity and vulgarity definitively fall under his attributes.
Mention of leading to more ungodliness, thanks to the normalization and romanization by the entertainment industry of sorcery and wizardry , you can now purchase beginner “craft” kits with all the necessary items and ‘instructions” needed, being touted as gift sets.
Yeah, that’s quite the gift there, an open door into demonic possession, destruction, and ultimately eternal damnation if not repented of.
Same thought pattern, if everyone around and online is doing it, it must be okay.
No, it’s not and never will be. We will all still stand in the presence of a Holy God and give account for our lives and even more so…
“But I say unto you, That every idle word that men shall speak, they shall give account thereof in the day of judgment.” Matthew 12:36
We all have days, we all get mad, we all fall prey to habits that we may not even give second thought to, but we are also responsible for our own behavior, and we are responsible to admit areas that we do struggle in and ask God to help us overcome those areas and he will.
We can’t continue on in our flesh, spouting off whatever leaps to mind and somehow think we are not doing to be discussing that with Christ when we stand before him.
Think I jest? I jest not.
Jeremiah 23:9-12: “Mine heart within me is broken because of thy prophets; all my bones shake (with terror); I am like a drunken man, and like a man whom wine has overcome, because of the LORD, and because of the words of his holiness.
For the land is full of adulterers; for because of swearing the land mourneth; the pleasant places of the wilderness are dried up, and their course is evil, and their force is not right.
For both prophet and priest are profane; yea, in my house have I found their wickedness, saith the LORD.
Wherefore their way shall be unto them as slippery ways in the darkness; they shall be driven on and fall therein: for I will bring evil upon them, even the year of their visitation, saith the LORD.”
Sounds pretty serious to me. It’s bad enough in the world but mingling it with a relationship with Christ is definitely something to be addressed and rectified once we understand the truth of his word concerning it.
Laughter is merry medicine as the Bible teaches us, it is health to our bones, however, as with the vain babblings, and profanity the same hold true with comedy.
If it is rife with mocking of God and vulgarity no one should ever need to be reminded that, God will not be mocked.
It is good to laugh but no one will escape wrath in thinking they will have a laugh at the expense of God.
He is holy and we should never listen to anything that references him, or his word, commandments, Bible accounts, anything pertaining to God from a condescending, doubting, or “humorous” view.
We have been given a wonderful opportunity to turn back to God as a nation and in that also help others find their path, if we continue to partake, or allow, or never speak out against these things we are going to fall under that same judgment described in the previous passage.
We have already read our warning, to shun these behaviors, run as far as you can from them, and walk away when others start spouting that poison, do not subject your soul to bad behaviors that will harm your very soul.
Think about Lot with that one. I’ve said that a thousand time too, but it is just the perfect example for so much, he wasn’t committing the sins that those of Sodom and Gomorrah were, but he vexed his soul, troubled his own soul, because he lived among them and witnessed all they did.
God saved him out of it because of Abrham but imagine how his story would have differed had he never been there.
Here is our Biblical instruction:
Ephesians 5:1-7: “Be ye therefore followers of God, as dear children; And walk in love, as Christ also hath loved us, and hath given himself for us as offering and a sacrifice to God for a sweetsmelling savour.
But fornication, and all uncleanness, or covetousness, let it not be once named among you, as becometh saints;
Neither filthiness (obscenities), nor foolish talking, nor jesting, which are not convenient (appropriate): but rather giving of thanks.
For this ye know, that no whoremonger, nor unclean person, nor covetous man, who is an idolater, hath any inheritance in the kingdom of Christ and of God.
Let no man deceive you with vain words: for because of these things cometh the wrath of God upon the children (offspring not actual children) of disobedience.
Be not ye therefore partakers with them (do not take part with them).”
Protect your mind and especially your soul from the spread and be bold when it’s your turn to tell those that may be around you to QUIT THAT CUSSING!
Blessing & Peace till next time, thanks for reading!
